History of Africa

What was one way that slavery in Africa differed from the institution of Europe or US?

Slavery in Africa differed from the institution that developed in Europe and the US in several ways. One example is the existence of "Domestic slaves."

Domestic Slaves

- Slavery in many parts of Africa primarily involved domestic servitude.

- Enslaved individuals primarily worked in households instead of large-scale agricultural plantations or industrial settings.

- Often worked closely with their masters and their families, performing various tasks such as cooking, cleaning, childcare, and other domestic labores.

- May have had greater opportunities for interaction and integration within the enslaver's household.

- While domestic slavery certainly involved power imbalances and exploitation, its nature and experiences could differ from those in plantation or industrial systems.

It's important to note that there was significant diversity and variations in the experiences and treatment of enslaved people across different regions, cultures, and time periods in both Africa and other parts of the world.
