Why did Cortez take Moctezuma prisoner?

Cortez did not take Moctezuma prisoner.

On November 8, 1519, Hernán Cortés and his men entered the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan and were greeted by Moctezuma II, the Aztec emperor. Moctezuma welcomed the Spanish into the city and gave them gifts and food. However, the Spanish soon began to abuse their power and demand more and more from the Aztecs.

In May 1520, the Aztecs revolted against the Spanish and drove them out of Tenochtitlan. The Spanish returned in August 1521 with a larger army and laid siege to the city. After a three-month siege, the Aztecs were defeated and Moctezuma was killed.
