How did Julius Caesar meet Cleopatra?

Julius Caesar first met Cleopatra in 48 BCE, when he arrived in Alexandria, Egypt, in pursuit of Pompey Magnus, who had been defeated at the Battle of Pharsalus. Cleopatra, at the time, was engaged in a civil war with her brother Ptolemy XIII. She managed to meet Caesar by having herself smuggled into his palace in a carpet, according to Plutarch. Caesar was impressed by Cleopatra's intelligence, charm, and beauty, and they quickly became lovers. Caesar supported Cleopatra in the civil war, defeating Ptolemy and installing her as the sole ruler of Egypt. Together, they had a son named Caesarion, who was born in 47 BCE.
