Did they ever make copper quarters?

Yes, the United States Mint did make copper quarters between 1828 and 1837. These quarters, made of 90% copper and 10% silver, were called "copper-nickel" coins because of their copper-like color. The copper-nickel quarters were unpopular, however, because the color was too similar to the dime and the half dollar. The mint discontinued making copper-nickel quarters in 1837 and replaced them with silver quarters.
