What does Historically Black Colleges and Universities include?

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs):

- In the United States, more than 100 public and private, degree-granting postsecondary institutions that were established prior to 1964 with the principal mission of educating Black Americans

- These institutions enroll a significant proportion of Black undergraduates

- 32 HBCUs are public institutions - funded mostly by state dollars

- All of the private HBCUs are located in the Southern and border states of Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia
