Historical story

Why was Buna evacuated?

The Buna camp evacuated in mid January of 1945 and was one of the last camps to evacuate as the Soviet Red Army approached. The death squads took over 7,000 prisoners on a death march to the Gross-Rosen work camp. Some 2,500 prisoners perished during the march, which led the remaining survivors to believe they would all be killed if they did not escape. An officer ordered 250 able-bodied prisoners to flee but they were to only take five minutes worth of supplies and only what they could carry. All of those who escaped survived the war.
