* Founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960. SNCC was a major force in the civil rights movement, organizing protests, voter registration drives, and other direct action campaigns.
* Helped organize the Freedom Rides of 1961. The Freedom Rides were a series of bus rides through the South designed to challenge segregation on public transportation. The rides were met with violence from white mobs, but they helped to galvanize the civil rights movement and led to the desegregation of interstate travel.
* Was a key figure in the March on Washington in 1963. The March on Washington was a massive demonstration for civil rights that brought together more than 200,000 people. Holmes helped to organize the march and spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
Charlyne Hunter
* Became the first African American student to enroll at the University of Georgia in 1961. Hunter's admission to UGA was a major victory for the civil rights movement, and it helped to pave the way for the desegregation of other southern universities.
* Faced discrimination and harassment from white students and faculty at UGA. Despite the challenges she faced, Hunter persevered and earned a degree in social work. She went on to become a successful social worker and civil rights activist.
* Continued to work for civil rights throughout her life. Hunter was involved in a number of civil rights organizations, including the SNCC and the NAACP. She also worked to improve conditions for African Americans in her community.
