In 1947, the British Government established a rocket testing range in Woomera. In cooperation with the Australian Government, the range developed into a multi-purpose facility that was used by Britain, the United States, and Australia for testing upper atmosphere research rockets and missiles including ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
