What metals were used for 1940 coins?

In 1940, the United States Mint produced coins using the following metals:

- Copper: One-cent coins (pennies) were made of copper.

- Nickel: Five-cent coins (nickels) were made of an alloy called "cupronickel", which is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel.

- Silver: Ten-cent coins (dimes), twenty-five-cent coins (quarters), and fifty-cent coins (half dollars) were made of an alloy called "sterling silver", which is composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.

- Gold: One-dollar coins ($1) were made of gold.
