How did Stonewall Jackson die?
On May 2, 1863, during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Stonewall Jackson sustained severe wounds from friendly fire from the 18th North Carolina Infantry.
Jackson was accidentally shot by his own pickets, who mistook him and his staff for Union cavalry in the dense woods during a night reconnaissance of enemy positions. Although his arm was amputated the following day, complications set in and he died of pneumonia eight days later on May 10, 1863.
