Victorian mothers were generally not allowed to work outside of the home. The vast majority of women in the Victorian era were expected to stay at home and take care of their families, while men went out to work. While there were some exceptions, such as women who worked in factories or as domestic servants, it was generally considered inappropriate for women to work outside of the home.
