The New World Symphony is an American orchestra based in Miami Beach, Florida. It was founded in 1987 by American conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. The orchestra is composed of recent graduates from music schools around the world.
The New World Symphony orchestra's name is derived from Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95, also known as the "New World Symphony". Dvořák composed the symphony in 1893 while living in the United States. The symphony is inspired by American folk music and Native American music, and is considered one of the most popular and beloved symphonies in the classical repertoire.
The New World Symphony orchestra adopted its name in honor of Dvořák's symphony and its connection to the United States. The orchestra's mission is to prepare young musicians for careers in professional orchestras and to present classical music to audiences in South Florida.
