Historical story

Where did the word Yankees come from?

The term "Yankees" originated from the Dutch nickname "Jan Kees" for the Dutch settlers of the New Amsterdam colony (present-day New York City) in the 17th century. The term originally referred to the Dutch themselves but was later used by the British colonists to refer to all residents of the New England region. The term became associated with the Northern states and the Union army during the American Civil War, and eventually became a generalized term for Americans in general.
