Historical story

Why was the penny different in 1943?

In 1943, the United States Mint produced pennies made of steel instead of copper. This change was made to conserve copper for the war effort, as copper was needed to make bullets, shell casings, and other war materials. The steel pennies were coated with zinc to give them a copper-like appearance. The steel pennies were produced for only one year, and they are now considered to be collector's items.
