Historical story

Was there ever a Lewis and Clark coin?

Yes, the United States Mint produced a Lewis and Clark commemorative half dollar in 2004 to honor the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The coin was designed by United States Mint sculptor-engravers Norman E. Nemeth and Donna Weaver. The obverse of the coin depicts a keelboat, the type of boat used by Lewis and Clark on their journey, with a setting sun in the background. The reverse of the coin depicts Lewis and Clark on horseback, with the Rocky Mountains in the background. The coin was minted at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints.
