Who said the Better angels of our nature?

The phrase "Better angels of our nature" was popularized by Abraham Lincoln in his first inaugural address on March 4, 1861. In this speech, Lincoln appealed to the better instincts of both the Northern and Southern factions to avoid civil war and find a peaceful resolution to the conflict over slavery. Lincoln's phrase has since become well-known as a call for the triumph of human goodness and civility over destructive tendencies.
