Hypatia's family was influential and well-educated. Her father, Theon of Alexandria, was a renowned mathematician and astronomer who served as the head of the Library of Alexandria. Theon provided Hypatia with a comprehensive education, teaching her mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and literature. Hypatia's mother's identity is not known, but it is believed that she came from a wealthy and educated family as well. Hypatia also had a brother, Theon the Younger, who was also a mathematician and astronomer. Together, Hypatia and her family contributed significantly to the intellectual and cultural life of Alexandria during the 5th century AD.
