Kathireson was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1990. She studied film and television at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, where she graduated in 2013. While in film school, she made several short films, including The Cake Thieves (2017), which was selected to screen at several international film festivals, including the Palm Springs International ShortFest and the Busan International Short Film Festival.
After graduating from film school, Kathireson returned to Kuala Lumpur, where she began working as a filmmaker and screenwriter. She wrote and directed several short films and web series, including The Last Day of Summer (2015), The Girl Who Knew Too Much (2016), and Keluarga Baha Don (2019).
