Historical story

When Christopher Columbus died what happened?

When Christopher Columbus died in 1506, his body was initially buried in the city of Valladolid, Spain. However, in 1542 his remains were exhumed and moved to the Dominican monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas in Seville, where they were interred in a chapel. In the early 19th century, the monastery was demolished, and Columbus's remains were once again exhumed. In 1898, they were transferred to the Seville Cathedral, where they were placed in a magnificent tomb designed by the sculptor Arturo Melida. There, they remain to this day, housed in a monumental monument called the "Columbus Mausoleum".
