The first dog biscuits were born in 1860 and invented by the American James Spratt
Animals have accompanied man since the dawn of civilization, but the habit of keeping them at home as members of the family in all respects spread only in the 19th century, in particular as regards dogs and cats.
Surrounding oneself with four-legged friends became, since then, a "mass fashion" concerning every social class, the bourgeoisie as well as the humblest strata of the population, an evidence that led to the birth of specific products , specially created for the nutrition and well-being of pets.
In 1860 the ingenious American entrepreneur James Spratt created and marketed the first dog biscuits , or delicious morsels made of meat, various vegetables, grits and beef blood.
It was only the beginning of an industry that soon developed and specialized to last successfully, adapting to times and needs, until today.
