Savoiardi biscuits
You would have never thought that Savoiardi, the famous biscuits also used for the preparation of many homemade desserts, date back to the Middle Ages?
To be precise, at the end of the 14th century and the name derives from that of House of Savoy ( see also https://www.pilloledistoria.it/7027/storia-contemporanea/il-vino-dei-savoia).
History has it that a cook who worked for the Savoy count Amedeo VI invented them. on the occasion of a visit by the royals to Chambéry.
We do not know exactly the original recipe, but it certainly involved the use of eggs, flour and sugar.
The Savoyards were successful and also spread beyond the Italian borders, starting with France.
Moreover, they are still very popular today both alone and as a base for some desserts.
After all, what would tiramisu be? and the Sponge cake without them? ( Photo from :cottoecrudo.it).
