A couple in the Middle Ages. Sex was forbidden on some days
The religious laws in force in medieval times prohibited (or attempted to do so) having sex on certain days of the year and in the presence of particular conditions of the woman.
Intimate intercourse was prohibited, for example, in the period of Lent and on weekends , but also when the woman had menstruation , as it is considered “impure”.
It is also forbidden to touch the partner pregnant and in the period immediately following the childbirth.
Those who violated, as in reality often happened, to these rules, were invited to atone for their sins through adequate penances, usually consisting of drastic fasts and in the recitation of prayers .
