Birth of the pandoro Melegatti
Together with panettone, the pandoro it is undoubtedly the most popular Italian dessert on Christmas tables.
The history of him is long and full of anecdotes and legends.
If its current appearance, soft and rather tall, dates back to the 19th century and derives, in turn, from the evolution of the " nadalin" , a Christmas cake typical of Verona from the 13th century, its name seems to date back to the times of the Venetian Republic , particularly prosperous and powerful during the Renaissance.
Among the foods of the time, it seems there was a conical-shaped dessert called "pan de oro".
However, there is also another version of the story, according to which this dessert derives from what for centuries represented the dessert typical of the court of the Doges , or the famous brioche French.
It is impossible, in the light of the sources currently available to us, to establish which of the two narratives corresponds to the truth of the facts.
However, the date of birth of the "modern" pandoro, certain and unanimously accepted, is 14 October 1884.
This is the day when the entrepreneur Domenico Melegatti filed with the patent office an incredibly soft, "star-shaped" cake made from butter and sugar.
“Our” pandoro was born, whose success has continued uninterrupted since then.
