Interior of the Colosseum. The name of the architect who conceived it has been lost
We know (almost) everything about the Colosseum, but because the architect is never mentioned who conceived it?
Easy: his name is lost.
In reality, almost all the names of the authors of the most famous Roman monuments remain unknown to us and the main reason lies in the fact that, at the time, the architects and the material executors were not so important, as to really count was only the client.
There was no Roman politician who did not wish to remain in history also for having commissioned works of art and grandiose public works, but whoever actually created them was decidedly in the background.
Until a few decades ago, in the capital, a story circulated according to which the architect of the Colosseum was a certain Gaudenzio, died as a Christian martyr right inside the building he designed, but it is just a legend, devoid of any foundation.
To this day, the identity of the author of the most famous arena in the world remains unknown, it is enough for us to know that it was the Emperor Vespasian who wanted it and that the inauguration took place under his successor Tito in 80 AD; from the name of their dynasty, that of the Flavians, derived the name of Flavian Amphitheater .
