The Romans loved perfumes very much
The perfumeries in Ancient Rome they were quite numerous and, above all, avant-garde for the time.
An ancient invention, the perfume it was in vogue in both Eastern and Western civilizations; in Rome, for the first time, this property became relatively common.
Obviously only the wealthiest could afford luxury fragrances, with prohibitive prices for the small people, who could however orient themselves on economic essences of lower quality but all in all decent ( see also: https://www.pilloledistoria.it/13476/storia-antica/profumi-nellantica-roma-contenitori).
But what were the perfumeries like in Ancient Rome?
In part we understand this from the archaeological excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum , where there are several such environments.
Today perfumes are produced on an industrial (or artisanal) level and then sold in special shops, but this distinction did not exist in the city and its territories.
In fact, from Pompeian and neighboring finds, we learn that pressing and enfleurage (extraction technique to cold extract the essences from the flowers), took place in a single room, in front of the eyes of the customers.
In short, the perfumeries in Ancient Rome were together laboratories and shops.
There were many in Campania, where very precious varieties of flowers were grown, among the most popular for making perfumes.
This was true, for example, for the famous roses ( see also :https://www.pilloledistoria.it/13563/storia-antica/rhodinum-italicum-profumo-alle-rose-romani). ( Photo from :tuttogreen.it).
