The first quarantine in Greece, implemented by Kapodistrias in 1828 to deal with the plague, and the medical treatment of the fighters of 1821 are the subject of the online event organized by the municipality of Kordelio Evosmou on March 21 (11.30 am). The event is organized in view of the national celebration of March 25, the Annunciation of the Virgin and the 200th anniversary of the Revolution of 1821.
We approach the revolution of 1821 from another perspective and focus with two thematic events, on the important field of medical care, on the treatment of the wounded of 1821, on the pandemics of the time, on feeding and also on the public health of the enslaved Greeks. Historians write that the main enemy of the Greeks was neither the Turks nor the lack of military equipment. It was the diseases, the injuries and the hunger, with the top historical coincidence being the treatment of the plague and the implementation of the first quarantine in Greece by Kapodistrias" notes the mayor of Kordelio-Evosmos Kleanthis Mandalianos.
The aim of the first part of the anniversary tribute, as stated by the deputy mayor of Social Protection - Public Health - KEP Fotini Pesmatzoglou-Devetzis, is through the historical "coincidence of events" and the "re-emergence of health pandemics":
a) to highlight once again the incomparable political insight and rare ability of a great Greek, the doctor-diplomat and first Governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias,
b) to make it known that today's global protocols against the coronavirus pandemic are based on his own health measures that he implemented in 1828 against the plague pandemic in Greece,
c) to emphasize that despite the inadequate infrastructure of public health, nursing care, the small number of medical practitioners and the complete insufficiency of medical equipment, the vigor, willpower, ingenuity and persistence of the doctors who offered the their services to the wounded fighters of the -Revolution of 1821,
d) to highlight the work of Local Government in the daily multi-faceted fight against the coronavirus pandemic
e) to highlight the role of Public Health in the Revolution of 1821, but also the history of Public Health in our country, which is a cornerstone in the foundation of every state.
During the event, according to APE-MBE, the professor of Pneumology and Infectious Diseases, Ioannis Kioumis will refer to Ioannis Kapodistrias and how he dealt with the plague epidemic with the first 50-day quarantine in Greece in 1828, with the closing of churches, cafes, tracking, zones and interdiction measures. He will also talk about the treatment of epidemics and vaccinations from the Middle Ages until today.
The dean of the School of Health Sciences, Professor Theodoros Dardavesis, will talk about public health, medical care and the care of the fighters of the Revolution of 1821." At the same time, he will talk about the doctors, general practitioners, pharmacists, quacks and charlatans who existed at that time, but also about the expression "kalo voli", which also meant a...quick, painless death.
