One of the most characteristic features of Prussia was always its high level of militarization. Being a small state surrounded by powerful enemies - Austria, France, Russia - Prussia always invested great efforts in protecting itself militarily. During the reign of Frederick II, the first War Academy was opened in Berlin, designed to train nobles in the art of military command.
After the wars of liberation against Napoleon, Prussia accelerated the militarization of society. During the 19th century military academies were opened in different cities of Prussia, including Danzig. In 1859 the Danzig officers' school opened its doors to train young men in military command.
Multidisciplinary courses were taught at the academy that allowed cadets to command troops, but also trained them to become the elite of Prussian society. The Danzig academy was in operation until the end of World War I, and in its classrooms perhaps the most famous German general of World War II was trained:Erwin Rommel.
The barracks still stand today. It currently houses the employment offices of the city of Gdansk. You can enter the building during office hours, but inside there is no glimpse of its military past.
