History quiz

Why did Thomas Jefferson want to include the passage about condemning slavery in Declaration of Independence if he was a slaveholder?

Although Thomas Jefferson was a slaveholder, he did not try to include a passage in the Declaration of Independence condemning slavery. In fact, the original draft of the Declaration of Independence did include a passage condemning slavery, but it was removed before the final version was approved. It is believed that the passage was removed because some of the other delegates to the Continental Congress were concerned that it would lead to a civil war.
