The Tuskegee Airmen were an all-Black unit of the United States Army Air Forces that fought in World War II. The unit was formed in 1941 and trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama. The Tuskegee Airmen flew more than 15,000 sorties over North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France. They were awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation and the Congressional Gold Medal for their service.
