Flying as wingman in a four-plane division operating from his assigned carrier deep in hostile waters for the purpose of destroying the enemy fleet supporting the invasion, Ens. Reid pressed home his assigned task with fearless determination when attacked by waves of hostile antiaircraft and fighter opposition. In the forefront of the attack and fully conscious of the imminent peril at which he faced in his hazardous mission, he repeatedly exposed himself to the deadly hostile fire to make strafing runs on vital installations within the inner ring of the heavily defended area, damaging many Japanese planes on the ground, until his plane, riddled with enemy rounds, crashed in flames with the complete loss of his courageous men. His courageous action contributed materially to the sinking of four of the enemy carriers within 45 minutes during that critical conflict and, by its inspiring quality, reflects the highest credit upon Ensign Reid and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
In addition to the Navy Cross, Ens. Jack also received the Purple Heart.
