Who replaced James II on the throne and why?

William of Orange replaced James II on throne during the Glorious Revolution in 1688. James II was a Roman Catholic and had attempted to impose religious reforms that were unpopular with many of his subjects. He also had a close relationship with France, which worried many English Protestants who feared a Catholic alliance against England. William III, on the other hand, was a Protestant and married to James II's daughter, Mary. He was invited by the English Parliament to come to England to take over the throne and was successful, leading to the displacement of James II.
