Historical Figures

What were British roles at home and work during World War 2?

At Home

* Women played a vital role in the war effort, taking on jobs traditionally held by men. They worked in factories, shipyards, and other war industries, as well as in the armed forces.

* Children were also involved in the war effort, helping to collect scrap metal and raising money for war charities. They were also evacuated from cities to the countryside to avoid the risk of bombing.

* The elderly and disabled also played their part, volunteering for war work or simply providing support to those who were fighting.

At Work

* The British economy was mobilised for war, with factories and businesses working around the clock to produce the weapons and supplies needed by the armed forces.

* The government also introduced a number of measures to control the economy, including rationing of food and other essential goods.

* The war also led to a number of social changes, such as the rise of the welfare state and the decline of the traditional working class.
