The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development provides low-income families with home repair loans and grants to make homes safer, more sanitary, and more energy-efficient. To qualify for these programs, the household's income must be at or below 50 percent of the area median income, and the home must be in a rural area. Additionally, the applicant must be a citizen of the United States or a qualified alien, and the home must be the applicant's primary residence.

The following programs are available:

* The 502 Direct Loan Program provides low-interest loans to very low- and low-income applicants for the purchase, construction, repair, or improvement of a home.

* The 504 Home Repair Program provides low-interest loans to very low- and low-income applicants for the repair of a home that is not safe or sanitary.

* The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) provides grants and loans to rural residents for the purchase and installation of renewable energy systems, energy efficiency improvements, and energy audits.
