Undergarments developed throughout the 1500s, and one of the most important garments which is still used nowadays was the chemise, or a slip. The chemise was a loose, knee or ankle length garment made of linen, silk or wool. Worn next to the skin, the chemise acted as an insulating layer and as a modesty garment, covering the bust, belly, back, upper arms and legs. Depending on the style and social status of the lady wearing it, chemises could be decorated with embroideries, ruffles, and fine fabrics.
