In 1928 the large size national currency design used since the 1869 series of notes ended. The new currency was more compact, and easier to handle and process. The portrait of Thomas Jefferson remained from the 1923 series. The reverse design featured Monticello and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST” within a scroll at the bottom.
