Leon Gambetta

Léon Gambetta studied law and became a lawyer in 1860. He began to associate with politics and approached the Republicans. Léon Gambetta opposed the Second Empire, he made himself known during the trial of a Republican, where he made a plea against Napoleon III in 1868. He began his political career by being elected deputy in the legislative elections of 1869.

After the defeat of Napoleon III in 1870, he became Minister of the Interior in the government of National Defense, and resigned shortly after the signing of the Armistice because he disagreed with the conditions imposed. Léon Gambetta participates in the construction of a new republic:he is one of the most important political figures of the beginnings of the III th Republic. After stepping away from French political life for a time, he was elected President of the Chamber of Deputies in 1879. From 1881 to 1882, Léon Gambetta was President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
