Coming from a modest family, Emmanuel Kant was born in Königsberg, in East Prussia. After studying theology, philosophy and science, he became a tutor (from 1746 to 1755) then a teacher at the University of Königsberg.
Kant's thought developed in a context where Copernicus and Newton revolutionize thinking and the way of seeing the world. His philosophy tries to answer these three questions:“What can I know? ", " What should I do ? », « What can I expect? ". The German philosopher wishes to put reason at the center of the world and of his analysis.
Thus, he addresses the question of knowledge in the Critique of Pure Reason (1781), Morality in Critique of Practical Reason (1788) as well as theology in Foundations of the metaphysics of morals (1785).
The philosopher's contemporaries affirm that Kant regulated his life minutely, like a clock; he took his walk every day at the same time. He retired from university teaching in 1796, and died on February 12, 1804 in his hometown.
