Hugh the Great (897 - 956)

Hugues le Grand is the son of Béatrice de Vermandois and Robert I. After the death of King Raoul, he installed Louis IV d'Outremer, son of Charles III the Simple on the throne, when he had been forced into exile in England. Louis IV gave him the title of Duke of the Franks. However, the latter seeking to emancipate himself, he allied himself with Herbert de Vermandois and Guillaume Longue-Épée, Duke of Normandy, and defeated Louis IV near Reims. Louis IV was then captured by the Normans, handed over to Hugh in 945. He ensured the guardianship of King Lothaire. He is often nicknamed the kingmaker and is often considered the true founder of the Capetian dynasty. He is the father of Hugues Capet.
