The Counts of Vermandois come from the second son of Charlemagne, Pépin Roi d'Italie, who died in 810 before his father. His descendants become Counts of Vermandois in West Francia. They are gradually gaining power by relying on their prestigious origin. With his cousins, Herbert constitutes a powerful group to the west, north and east of Paris.
