Henry of Guise (1550 – 1583)

Elder son of François de Guise, Henri was 13 when his father was assassinated, his uncle Charles de Lorraine responsible for his education. Having become a clan chief, Henri poses as a defender of the Catholic faith against the Huguenots. He actively participated in the second and third wars of religion, distinguishing himself against his rival Admiral de Coligny (battle of Jarnac, defense of Poitiers, battle of Moncontour). He participated in the assassination of Protestant leaders during the night of Saint-Barthélemy. Under Henri III, he took the lead of the Catholic League and increased his popularity thanks to his victories (Dormans, 1575). He signs the Treaty of Alliance of Joinville with the King of Spain. He actively participated in the day of the barricades (May 12, 1588) driving the king out of the city. It was too much for Henry III who had him assassinated during the Estates General of Blois, his ashes were thrown into the Loire.
