Daughter of Didier, King of the Lombards, Gerberge married Carloman with a view to an alliance between the two peoples. But on the death of Carloman, Charlemagne dismisses the inheritance of his nephews and seizes the kingdom. Gerberge then fled with her children to her father's home in Pavia. The Frankish armies having defeated the Lombards, Gerberge was imprisoned in the monastery of Corbie.
