French painter, leader of the neo-classical school (which advocates a return to the aesthetic canons of Antiquity Greek and Latin). He was a member of the Convention, but he was imprisoned after the fall of Robespierre, he was pardoned under the Empire, of which he became the official painter ("Le Sacre", "...Bonaparte...au col du grand Saint- Bernard", "the distribution of eagles"), he also painted the famous "assassinated Marat". He went into exile under the Restoration.
