Captain in 1789, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly where he played an important role on the military committee. He deserved the nickname of "Organizer of Victory":member of the Committee of Public Safety, he created the armies of the Republic and imposed offensive tactics while the enemy was at the borders. He notably went on a mission to the North or to the Pyrenees. He participated in the fall of Robespierre and was then a member of the Council of Elders then Director where he mainly dealt with military issues. He left for Switzerland after the coup d'etat in Fructidor. He stood aside under the Empire and the Restoration banished him as a regicide. He is also a mathematician and was one of the founders of modern geometry.
