In matriculation, students had to choose either Sanskrit or Gujarati as an optional subject along with other subjects. Vallabhbhai chose Gujarati language. The teachers of Gujarati language used to teach Gujarati but had great affection for Sanskrit language. He did not like that a meritorious student like Vallabhbhai should not study Sanskrit.
That's why he got angry and asked Vallabhbhai why did you not take Sanskrit? Vallabhbhai, sensing his displeasure, replied that if all the students took Sanskrit, what would you teach? The teacher got angry on this and ordered Vallabhbhai to bring up to 200 padas (correct pronunciation tables) from his house.
Sardar understood that he had been punished. Therefore, they did not bring them by writing the tables from home. When the teacher asked why he did not bring 200 padas, Vallabhbhai replied, Guruji had left the house with 200 padas (children of buffaloes) but there were two big miscreants, so they rioted so much on the way that all the padas ran away. After that he himself ran away.
Hearing Vallabhbhai's answer, the teacher complained to the principal about Vallabhbhai. When the principal asked, Vallabhbhai replied that he is a teacher of Gujarati, what is his relation with the mountains! On this the principal understood that it was not the student's fault, he had become a victim of the teacher's insistence and he forgave Vallabhbhai.
