What deed is Hernan Cortes most famous for?

Hernán Cortés is best known for his conquest of the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century. In 1519, he led an expedition from Cuba to Mexico, where he allied with the native Tlaxcalans against the Aztecs. After several battles, Cortés and his men captured the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan in 1521, effectively ending the Aztec Empire and marking the beginning of Spanish rule in Mexico.
