Were the first french explorers interested in finding northwest passage to china?

The French were not the first explorers to search for a Northwest Passage. The first European explorers to search for a Northwest Passage were the English, led by explorers such as John Cabot and Martin Frobisher in the 16th century. The French entered the race for a Northwest Passage much later, with Pierre De La Verendrye leading the first expedition in 1731.
