PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT:Truth or Another Conspiracy Theory?

The Philadelphia Experiment is one of the most widespread and at the same time one of the most horrific military legends in history, and has been "filed" by many simply as an infamous conspiracy theory during World War II. However, how much truth is hidden in the Philadelphia Experiment and to what extent has the myth eroded reality? Let's see in detail. According to legend, on October 28, 1943, on the destroyer USS Eldridge, secret experiments were conducted that aimed to give American ships mastery of the seas in order to defeat the Axis powers.

It is said that the conditions were created by technology that would make warships invisible to enemy radar, and then, in 1943, at the Philadelphia Shipyard, it was time to put them into practice. Witnesses claim that an eerie and eerie green-blue glow surrounded the ship's hull as the rotors from the generators running the experiment began to spin. As the tension grew the 'Eldridge' disappeared. The ship then unexpectedly appeared at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia, 350 kilometers to the south, before disappearing again to reappear in Philadelphia.

Legend has it that classified military documents record how the crew of the Eldridge was affected by the event in various ways:“Half the officers and crew of the ship are now insane. Some even become invisible again if they do not undergo special scientific treatment." Also the side effects of the experiment were terrifying for the crew of the Eldridge. Some were mysteriously burned. Others debased and disappeared forever and others merged with the metals of the ship”… But what is the real reason why the story of the “Eldridge” gained so much acceptance, so that it is known even today with such momentum? In a 1994 article for the Journal of Scientific Exploration, Jacques Vallée opined that strong narratives are the key to opening the minds of the masses and the educated public and cracking the joke.

Who is behind the myth of the Philadelphia experiment

But before we break down what really happened that day, let's talk about the man behind the legend, Carl Allen, who went by the alias Carlos Miguel Allende. In 1956, Allende sent a series of letters to Morris Chesap, who included them in his book:"The Case for the UFO". Chesap had previously published a text on Unified Quantum Field Theory which fascinated Allende and this was what his correspondence was about. In the 1950s, Quantum Field Theory has never been proven and there was an attempt by some to merge Einstein's General Theory of Relativity with electromagnetism. In fact, Allende claimed to Chesap that he had Einstein himself as a professor and could prove the unified Quantum Field Theory based on the events he witnessed on October 28, 1943.

Chesap was an astronomer, astrophysicist, mathematician, researcher and author, one of the first proponents of the "ancient astronauts" theory. Allende wrote in his letters details of the Philadelphia Experiment and the side effects on the crew of the USS Eldridge. Allende claimed to have seen the Eldridge disappear from the Philadelphia shipyard and insisted that the United States military had conducted what he called the "Philadelphia Experiment" and tried to cover it up. Allende even declared himself willing to be examined with truth serum to reveal more details. He was also talking about the patrons of a bar who saw US Navy men walking through walls!

Chesap then contacted the Navy's Office of Naval Research, to which he had previously sent his book, in which he claimed that "extraterrestrial technology enabled the US government to make breakthroughs in unified field theory." One of the strangest details was that the reviews for the book were written in such a way that it looked like they were written by three different authors, one – perhaps – an alien…

A certain Alfred Bilek later claimed to be one of the survivors of the Philadelphia Experiment in the book:"The Philadelphia Experiment and Other UFO Conspiracy" by Brent Steiger, Bilek mentions that a member of the program team was the great Serbian American scientist Nikola Tesla. As Bilek claims, although it was a private research activity, there was funding from the US Navy from the start. All the work and the experiment was based on the application of the Unified Field theory which was first formally presented in 1925-1927 by Einstein.

The plausible version of the Philadelphia experiment

And to return to the original originators of the myth, according to Valle's article in Scientific Exploration, Chesap was obsessed with Allende's revelations until his death on April 20, 1959. Chesap was found dead in his car . The official version was suicide by blowing "fumes" into the interior of the car... Only in 1980 would evidence of Allende's excesses become available. What really happened on the USS 'Eldridge' that day? US Navy admits USS "Eldridge" D.E. 173 did take part in an experiment during which its hull was wrapped in cables. This process is called "ship degaussing" and is done to prevent sea mines from hitting it. With degaussing, the ship is protected from underwater magnetic mines, but still visible to the eye or radar. This explanation is plausible, but few believed it. Finally, the inland canals connect Norfolk with Philadelphia allowing a ship to travel between the two in a matter of hours.

When the "Eldridge" came to Greece as the destroyer "Leon"

The ship involved in the alleged Experiment, the US "Eldridge", was given to the Hellenic Navy, as part of American aid, and renamed "Leon". It entered service in 1951 and was decommissioned in 1992. The battleship "Leon" has always been accompanied by unreal stories and legends. It is said that during exercises in the Ionian Sea in the 1950s he disappeared for two days and that some areas of the ship were sealed off for no reason. It was also said that many sailors who served on the ship experienced unexplained psychological and neurological problems. A/T "Leon" was decommissioned in 1992. It was decommissioned in 1996, at Amfiali, where crews removed its individual parts, based on a list sent from the USA that (said to) contained 500,000 items! On November 11, 1999, it was sold to "V&J SCRAPMETAL TRADING L.T.D.", based in Piraeus, for dismantling and shredding.
