Denkyera | historical kingdom, Africa

Denkyera , also Denkyira , the largest 17th-century kingdom in the South Akan- Peoples in the forested hinterlands of the modern Southwest Coast Ghanas . According to tradition, its kings migrated from the northern Akan or Brong area. By the end of the 17th century they had conquered the subjects Twifo and Akan of Axim (to the south), took over the rich gold-bearing districts of Wassaw and Aowin (to the west) and their dominion founded over Elmina Castle - the richest market on the Gold Coast .

Denkyera's desire to control key gold mining resource areas brought Denkyera into conflict with Asante , against which it fought a series of ultimately unsuccessful wars between 1699 and 1701. After Denkyera's ultimate defeat, many chiefs recognized the authority of the Asante king Osei Tutu - from which they were incorporated into the Kumasi division of his kingdom - while others located south of Denkyera's alter moved capital Abankeso, retaining their national identity but recognizing Asante suzerainty.
