Suhrawardy's plan to create a separate Bengal

Another trick went to change the Lord Mountbatten plan. Suhrawardy, the Chief Minister of Bengal, who was the villain of direct action in Bengal, came to Gandhiji with a proposal. His plan was that the Congress should agree that the whole of Bengal be declared an independent state. Gandhiji agreed to it.

Babu Saratchandra Bose and other Bengali Congressmen also got caught in this trick and the plan for independent Bengal was started, but the leader of Hindu Mahasabha, Syamaprasad Mukherjee disclosed this plan. Dr. Mukherjee said that this plan of independent Bengal is a conspiracy to include full Bengal in Pakistan.

He told that- 'First Bengal will be made an independent country and when this independent country fails to protect its independence then majority of the Muslims there will give it completely in the hands of Pakistan.'

After Dr. Mukherjee revealed the conspiracy of the Muslim League, Gandhi placed a condition before Suhrawardy that Gandhi would accept to bless this plan only when three-fourths of the members of the Bengal Legislative Assembly passed the plan with a majority. Along with this, Gandhiji also wanted to put a condition that no decision will be valid in future unless three-fourth Hindu members of the Legislative Assembly of independent Bengal are in favor of that decision.

The Muslim League said that the decisions of the Legislative Assembly of independent Bengal would be accepted by three-fourths vote, but Gandhiji's demand did not mean that, he was talking about three-fourth majority of Hindus. The Congress leaders also came to know about the conspiracy of the Muslim League that the Muslim League of Bengal, with the help of Suhrawardy, is engaged in mobilizing the members of the untouchable castes of the Bengal Legislative Assembly in favor of the plan of the Muslim League. Thus this trick of the Muslim League also failed.

A dangerous psychology was working behind this plan of Suhrawardy. In fact, Suhrawardy's contribution was the most in making Pakistan's impossible-dream possible. He himself will fight in Bengal 'Pakistan' was called upon. 'Direct Action Day' in Calcutta was planned and executed with utmost brutality.

Jinnah was only doing the word-leadership, it was being implemented on earth by Suhrawardy and people like him, but now when the time came for the creation of Pakistan, Suhrawardy felt the earth slipping under his feet. Leaders like Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Liaquat Ali, Chaudhry Muhammad Ali and Abdul Rab Nishtar, who had been doing politics in Delhi till now, were going to do politics sitting in Karachi or any other city of West-Pakistan after the formation of Pakistan.

The condition of East Bengal and its leaders was going to be like second class leaders. Therefore, through the plan given to Gandhiji, he tried to find a way out of the future East-Pakistan, the future West-Pakistan.

Moseley has written in this direction - 'Suhrawardy made his last attempt to get the demand for independent Bengal accepted because he knew that he was not going to get the place he wanted in Pakistan. Jinnah had chosen Nazimuddin for East Bengal. Suhrawardy was thinking of staying in India.'
