Production and distribution

The Winchester 1873, sold in more than 720,000 copies for 50 years (1873-1923), received no orders from the American Army but was used during the Indian wars (notably by the Apache warriors of Geronimo) and especially by Texas Ranger Division and many sheriffs in the United States. Its most famous users were Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill (and his troupe), Calamity Jane, the Dalton brothers, Charlie Siringo and Belle Starr. It was massively exported to Latin America (Brazil, Haiti and Nicaragua in particular:payment in tons of coffee), to the Chinese Empire, Spain and Morocco (100,000 guns). The Spanish military versions were produced by the FAO (Oviedo arsenal) and put into service from 1879. They existed in rifle and carbine versions (56 cm barrel) and were fitted with a bayonet (blade approximately 41 cm ). These Winchesters were used by the Civil Guard during the Spanish Civil War.

Given the success of the Westerns, the Italian firm Uberti has been producing modern replicas since the early 1960s. Other transalpine manufacturers did the same. Finally in 2013, Winchester reintroduced the Model 73 in its catalog.
